Lexical transformations in the English-Ukrainian translation of a literary text (based on the novel "Fourth Wing" By Rebecca Yarros and its Ukrainian translation by Oleksii Manko and Bohdan Horvat).
Abstract
In modern translation studies, an important area of research is the study of translation transformations as a means of reproducing the artistic features of a literary text. The relevance of this topic is determined by the need for an in-depth examination of lexical changes that occur in the process of translating from English into Ukrainian, as well as by the need to clarify their role in ensuring an adequate rendering of the meaning of the original text. The article examines lexical translation transformations in English-Ukrainian literary translation based on the novel “Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros and its Ukrainian version “Chetverte krylo”, translated by Oleksii Manko and Bohdan Horvat. The aim of the study is to identify the specific features of the use of translation transformations and to determine their role in achieving translation equivalence and an adequate rendering of the semantic content of the source text. The main method used in the study is the descriptive method, which makes it possible to outline the main theoretical foundations of the research. The method of continuous sampling was applied to select illustrative material. The comparison of linguistic units of the original and the translation is carried out through comparative and interpretative analysis of textual material in order to reveal the specific features of the transformations that constitute the subject of the study. As a result of the conducted examination, it has been established that the translation actively employs such lexical transformations as antonymic translation, semantic development, concretization, addition, omission, combined transformations, compensation, transliteration, transcription, and generalization. The use of these translation techniques contributes to a more accurate rendering of the meaning of the source text, as well as to the preservation of the artistic expressiveness and communicative integrity of the translated text.
