These concepts serve as the object of study, while their corresponding lexemes - personality, person, persona, individuality, and individual - are examined as linguistic representations. Despite being treated as synonyms in thesaurus dictionaries, these terms exhibit nuanced differences, which this study seeks to clarify. Understanding these differences is essential in linguistic and interdisciplinary studies, including cognitive linguistics, philosophy of language, in particular for a clearer interpretation of identity-related constructs in discourse. The analysis is based on lexicographic sources and discourse samples obtained through continuous sampling from electronic resources, including the British National Corpus. The study employs etymological and componential analysis methods to reveal the interconnections among these concepts. Findings indicate that INDIVIDUALITY partially overlaps with PERSONALITY, PERSON, and INDIVIDUAL. For instance, the lexeme individuality encompasses meanings such as “an individual,” “personality,” and “person,” reflecting its conceptual interrelations. The study argues that self-realization begins with the indivisible nature of an individual, from which the Self or “I” emerges. Over time, this Self acquires a personality through actions and interactions, expressed through various personas or masks. Thus, individuality represents inherent existence, while personality manifests through behavior and social roles. The relevance of modeling the value segment of the concept COSY lies in addressing the scientific gap in studying the cultural and social aspects of cosiness discourse. The article reveals the linguistic realization of the value segments of the concept COSY for a deeper understanding of modeling the cultural and psychological aspects of cozy discourse through the following tasks: summarizing existing research on the value segments of the concept; establishing a theoretical basis for understanding how phraseological and paremiological expressions reflect the values of contemporary English cozy discourse; applying conceptual analysis to the study of concepts; analyzing specific examples of phraseological units and proverbs in lexicographic sources to reconstruct the concept COSY; conducting a semantic-pragmatic analysis of stable expressions that, although not containing the lexeme “cosy”, have components related to the lexical meaning of “coziness”, thus allowing these proverbs to be considered as verbalizers of cosiness discourse. The value component of the concept COSY is determined by the meanings of the studied linguistic units and reflects the worldview of language speakers, influenced by the process of conceptualization in its formation. An interpretation of the ethnic worldview is presented through the absence of numerous value dominants in cosiness discourse of the English-speaking linguistic culture. The methodological toolset employed in the paper includes the notions of conceptual sphere, domain, and subdomain used in cognitive linguistics as well as basic propositional schemas (BPS) which are recognized by the semantics of lingual networks as the units human mentality operates. The first stage of analysis consisted in distribution of food products whose names feature in the idioms of the two languages across domains and subdomains constituting the corresponding conceptual sphere. Then, the structures and quantitative parameters of English and Ukrainian domains and subdomains were compared, exposing major similarity of the structure but significant differences in the usage frequency of certain products. The identified frequency enabled us to determine the constituents of the typical diet of the English and the Ukrainians. For the English, it contains broth, meat, eggs, beans, salt, cheese, pie (cake), nuts, and apples washed down by wine, milk, and tea. Ukrainians conventionally consume bread, butter, soup, porridge, peas, lard, pepper, salt, horseradish, pie, bagels, poppy, nuts, and honey accompanied by horilka and milk. The second stage of analysis focused on exposing the nature of characteristics of products mentioned in the idioms of both languages. Conceptually, such features correlate with predicates of basic propositional schemas. The numerical indices that manifest the frequency of their usage allowed us to pinpoint the peculiar features of the mentality of the two nations that are reflected in the idioms of corresponding languages.</p> Dmytro Pavkin Copyright (c) 2025-07-07 2025-07-07 101 27 41 10.26565/2786-5312-2025-101-03 Contextual Synonymy: Approaches to Identification and Cognitive Analysis https://periodicals.karazin.ua/foreignphilology/article/view/26738 <p>The article reviews the state of modern research on the phenomenon of contextual synonymy (CS), noting the complex systematicity and structure of this phenomenon. At present, there is no complete analysis in this direction. The scientific approaches of various authors to the study of CS are identified: semiotic, linguocognitive, linguostylistic.</p> <p>In general, the work emphasizes the frame analysis of CS as a type of linguocognitive approach, since the frame visualizes a complex scheme of searching for CS in the text, their interpretation, identifying their common seven, determining the referent of CS, explaining the role of CS in revealing the deep subtext in the content of the text. Particular attention is focused on the attached procedure in the frame, which allows for detailed and visual identification and analysis of all these important factors.</p> <p>The paradoxical type of context is also considered, from which it is impossible to determine the referent of the CS; in this case, the detection of the CS and the deep subtext of the paradox is clearly determined by frame analysis. It is noted that for the correct decoding of the contextual meanings of words and expressions, it is necessary to establish the type of context by which the meanings are activated. Therefore, the work provides a list and characteristics of the types of context. As a result, another type is added to this list - paradoxical context.</p> <p>General rules for ordering synonyms according to their distance from the first, nominative synonym are outlined, but this scheme is suitable only for lexical synonyms; for CS, their ordering is possible only through the classification of their referents.</p> <p>Prospects for the development of this and other works of the chosen direction are the further formation of a general theory of CS, the study of contextual synonymy in different types of context, taking into account their structure and composition. The relevance of the work is in an actively functioning advertising discourse, especially in the perspective of significant global events, which take place within its framework. The aim of the work is to highlight the pragmatic and stylistic means of advertising discourse, their relationship with the discourse synergetics through the intertextual connections of its texts.</p> <p>The practical material of the work is the advertising of the Bitburger brand in cooperation with Serviceplan for UEFA European Championship 2024, which was held in Germany. In the studied examples from the advertising text, the presence of expressiveness means of the message is established: appeals to international unity, exchange of traditions in a dialogue with a viewer, to universal human concepts, as well as stylistic figures (parallelism, metaphor). Examples of the discourses’ fusion (advertising and media) are also given, in which the principles of synergistic properties of discourse systems operate within intertextual connections, such as citation, allusion, and manipulative constructions. The authors see the prospect of the research in combination of two approaches (synergetics, intertextuality) to the study of discourse.</p> <p>In the conclusions, the authors trace that within the framework of the chosen context, both the synergistic component of the advertising discourse and the intertextual manifestations of its text. In particular, it examines methods that ensure the accuracy of conveying the content, style, as well as the cultural and emotional aspects of the original, which are essential for maintaining the authenticity of the translation. The study identifies key methods for achieving these principles, which are crucial for improving translation practice. Special attention is given to the application of theoretical developments in translation activities, which contribute to achieving high accuracy and aesthetic correspondence in translations, especially in different text genres – from scientific to literary. The article highlights that in modern translation studies, due to the diversity of text genres, it is crucial to apply specialized approaches adapted to the characteristics of each genre. The proposed generalized system of translation reproductions opens new possibilities for equivalent and adequate translation of technical, scientific, journalistic, official-business, advertising, and literary texts. The use of such reproduction methods as transcoding and transformational translation, which includes lexical-semantic and lexical-grammatical translation transformations, allows for optimal results in conveying the content, form, and communicative intent of the original while considering the genre's specifics. The combination of these methods enables the adaptation of the text to the requirements of the target language while preserving the key aspects of the original: content, style, and cultural specificity. Among the age-old challenges of mankind, there are always questions of life and death, which, in particular, are realized through the motif of death, which receives its highest literary and artistic manifestation in the European Baroque period. The research focuses on the problems of reproducing the Baroque consciousness through a poetic image that is reproduced in different dimensions. From this perspective, a comparative translation analysis of the linguistic and semiotic nature of J. Milton's epitaph <em>“On Shakespeare”</em> is aimed at finding an answer to the question of the translator's perception of the specifics of the English Baroque, which is reproduced in four translations by I. Franko, Mykhailo Orest, V. Mysyk, and M. Pylynsky. The chosen topic and research material involve several general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction, observation, and summarization) as well as philological methods (the method of linguistic semiotic analysis in translation semiosis, elements of the biographical method, the comparative method along with linguistic stylistic, descriptive, and comparative translation analysis).&nbsp; The findings suggest that different translation options combine, complement each other, compete with each other, and even negate each other. The relevance of the problem is determined by such factors as: first, history and modernity are closely interconnected, therefore, the study of historical memory is useful for any nation; second, the current historic situation arouses considerable interest in Ukraine throughout the world; third, the work such as “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” is a certain challenge for the translator, since the text is loaded with interesting linguistic units that require the use of various translation transformations; fourth, the features of the translation of this work have not yet received full coverage in the theoretical literature. A brief analysis of recent research works related to the problems of translating ancient literature indicates that scientists have considered a number of interesting issues in this area, but the spectrum of various problems is very wide, and there is room for working out previously unresolved issues. The purpose of the article is quite specific – to analyze the features of English-language translations of such a well-known passage, which has long been perceived as a separate work – “Laments of Yaroslavna”. To achieve this goal, it is advisable to solve the following tasks: to accumulate factual material for comparative analysis; to review the current state of scientific study of English-language translations of “The Tale…”; to identify linguistic units of the original that require special attention from the translator; to compare their translation options, highlighting finds and losses. The material for the study is the existing translations of “The Tale…” into English. Almost every linguistic unit of this text requires translational reflections and adequate solutions, but attention is focused on certain groups of translation problems, namely: 1) nominative solutions; 2) stylistic means; 3) archaic vocabulary and historical realities. It was determined that the main means of translation of onomastic units are transliteration, transcription with elements of descriptive translation. The translation of stylistic devices (addresses, personifications, epithets) was carried out close to the original text, the use of various suffixes was observed. The translation of realities was also carried out close to the text, but it should be noted that the essence of some of them remains uncertain, for example, Khin arrows, which is broader than a purely translation problem. The relevance of the study is due to the important role of analogy in the formation of lexicalised forms of language game and the choice of the translator's strategy for their foreign language reproduction. The purpose of the study is twofold: (1) to determine how analogy influences the creation of various forms of language game in English popular science discourse; (2) to determine how analogy influences the translator's decision-making regarding the strategy of reproducing these forms of language game in Ukrainian translation. The object of our study is analogy as a psychological mechanism and cognitive procedure of formal and/or semantic likening of one linguistic unit to another, as well as transferring relations between units of one group to units of another group. The subject of the analysis is its influence on the formation of language game in the English-language popular science discourse and on the formation of strategies for its Ukrainian translation. To achieve this goal, a number of methods were used, such as: stylistic analysis, contextual analysis, structural and semantic analysis, comparative analysis of the source and target texts. The material used was lexicalised forms of language game from English popular science discourse and their Ukrainian translations. The study allows us to conclude that the formation of lexicalised forms of language game, like any word-formation activity, is similar to that of everyday lexemes. In translation, we observe the influence of analogy in cases where the translator chooses a strategy of mirroring the author's actions, copying the author's chosen method of word formation and using direct correspondences of the used linguistic units. It is noted that scientific works on this topic allow us to reconsider the pivotal stages of the development of the religious literature translation in a new way, which played a crucial role in shaping the cultural heritage and national identity of the Ukrainian people. Liturgical translation, which has a special significance in the religious sphere, is defined as a factor that contributes to the unity of the nation around Christian moral values. The study of genre and stylistic aspects of translation on the material of the Ukrainian and Polish languages provides a theoretical basis for solving practical problems related to the work of a translator of religious literature. Particularly valuable is the expansion of the geographical boundaries of Ukrainian translation studies through the inclusion of research results of representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in the Prešov region . Since 2017, the Ukrainian Institute, a national institution, has been representing Ukrainian culture in the world, including through the translation of Ukrainian literature into various languages. It promotes the dissemination of literary translations of Ukrainian literature around the world, including in Italy. The purpose of this study is to analyse the representation of the self-image and hetero-image of Ukraine and Ukrainians through the Italian-language translation of Ukrainian literature. The material of the study was Italian translations of Ukrainian poetry and prose of the nineteenth, twentieth and twentieth-first centuries, which were made and published in Italy in 2022-2024. The main method of the study was an imagological analysis of the texts. During the analysed period, two poetry and one prose anthologies of works by Ukrainian authors of the nineteenth, twentieth and twentieth-first centuries, three collections of poetry by individual authors, and ten novels, short stories, and diaries by classic and contemporary Ukrainian authors were published in Italy. Through the prism of these translations, the ethnic image of Ukraine as an integral part of the European intellectual space, as a country of rich history and culture, was modelled. The image of Ukrainians of different eras was shown primarily as an image of strong-minded, life-loving, highly moral people with good aesthetic taste, for whom philosophy and love for their country are an organic part of the national ethnic culture. From the pages of classical Ukrainian literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the archetypal features of the national character of Ukrainians were emphasised, such as individualism, cordocentrism, and antiism. Its relevance lies in providing flexible and accessible educational opportunities for students around the world. <em>The purpose</em> of the study is to trace the evolution of distance learning from its origins to the present, identify key factors that have influenced its development, and outline potential directions for its future development. <em>The research objectives</em> are to analyse the historical development of distance learning, identify key technological, pedagogical, and social factors that have influenced its evolution, determine the contribution of specialists and institutions to the development of distance learning, and outline potential directions for the development of distance learning in the future. <em>Research results</em>: 1. Key stages in the development of distance learning are identified, starting from training methods for military personnel in the 1940s to modern online platforms and MOOCs. 2. Recent developments in AI and neural machine translation have significantly enhanced translation efficiency and accuracy, influencing translator roles worldwide and emphasizing the necessity of adapting educational approaches accordingly. The purpose of the research is to identify existing gaps in language proficiency, translation technology competencies, and skills resilient to automation within Ukrainian higher education curricula, proposing targeted reforms. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, analyzing quantitative data from university programs and qualitative assessments of curricular documentation. Key findings reveal substantial disparities in students' initial language proficiency, insufficient integration of translation technologies, and inadequate preparation for machine translation post-editing tasks. The study concludes that significant improvements in language training are necessary to enable students to effectively post-edit AI-generated translations and undertake complex, specialized tasks beyond routine translation. Recommendations include implementing standardized entry-level proficiency testing, restructuring curricula in accordance with European Master's in Translation (EMT) standards, and integrating comprehensive machine translation post-editing (MTPE) courses. The main goal of the work is to determine the impact of the section (visits/meetings/receptions) of the special course “Political Translation. First Steps” on the formation of relevant competencies in students. To achieve this goal, a hypothesis was formulated, a research methodology was developed, which included test tasks on the translation of general political terminology, and an experimental section was conducted. During the experiment, students were divided into control and experimental groups, with the first group receiving training in accordance with the approved educational program, while the latter additionally studied the above-mentioned special course. The testing results showed that students in the experimental group achieved slightly higher performance in translating the terminology of the above-mentioned topic from both Ukrainian and English. The average level of acceptability of the answers in them was 87%, while in the control group it was 79%. Preliminary data indicate that the specialized course in general and its section (visits/meetings/receptions) in particular have a positive impact on expanding the terminological lexicon of students and improving their translation skills. Given the small gap in the indicators of the groups, the results obtained require additional verification with other experimental prerequisites. This is because they need continuous growth to effectively inspire and motivate their students. In an era where the Internet provides unlimited access to information, schools and teachers are no longer the primary sources of knowledge. Contrary to what a lot of people still tend to believe, the transfer of knowledge and information is no longer the predominant function of schools and other educational institutions.</p> <p>This paper explores the roles that schools, institutes of higher education and teachers should fulfill in the rapidly changing, technology-driven world. It briefly introduces selected concepts related to coaching and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), offering practical suggestions for integrating them into translation classrooms with a view to enhancing the process of both teaching and learning. The goal is also to encourage teachers to consider the psychological aspects of being a student – a translation trainee – as well as to view themselves not solely as educators, but also as coaches who strive to bring out the best in their students.&nbsp;</p> <p>Coaching and NLP provide a valuable range of methods that can help academic professionals and students alike achieve their career objectives while enhancing their well-being and performance. The influence of different types of agency on the formation of a sustainable learning environment in the context of digitalisation is determined: student agency is conductive to the adaptation of students to local and global transformations; teacher agency ensures the flexibility of the educational process; co-agency contributes to the strengthening of subject interaction and effective collaboration between all stakeholders of the educational environment. The article highlights that the latest technologies have both a positive and negative impact on the development of all types of agency: learning management systems (LMS) and interactive online platforms help to expand access to educational resources, personalise the learning process and increase its flexibility. Despite their significant benefits, digital technologies in education also pose a number of challenges. The key risks include the digital divide, whereby some students may be left out of the mainstream educational process due to low levels of technological accessibility or lack of digital skills, and the negative impact on academic integrity, which is the proliferation of opportunities for academic misconduct, including plagiarism and misuse of educational resources. Consequently, writing is integral to university curricula, with competence-oriented instruction based on European language education recommendations. The English Writing Centre at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (KMA EWC), established in 2014, aimed to enhance students' <em>English as a Foreign Language</em> (EFL) writing skills. However, its services were suspended during the pandemics and armed conflict. Proceeding from scholarly research in the related fields, this study examines the challenges faced by the KMA EWC, focusing on the impact of global and local crises on its practices. With the aim of restoring the KMA EWC, we emphasise the need for innovative approaches to support students, faculty, and the centre itself in times of hardship. In the context of rapid AI development, the study addresses concerns about learners' tendencies to misuse of AI-generated content, raising concerns about academic integrity and posing risks to the EWC's very existence. Given the current global and local crises, the project envisions the online Learning Management System (LMS) as a platform for effective tutoring, proposing a hybrid model that integrates online and offline sessions. Based on the survey-based research methodology, incorporating career-oriented writing into the EWC's activities is identified as a high priority. Additionally, informed by research on therapeutic writing and language-through-resilience teaching, the KMA EWC views writing sessions as a means to nurture the participants’ emotional well-being. It discusses the difficulties students face in mastering sounds, characters, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and cultural aspects of the Chinese language. The relevance of the topic is due to the significant development of technology and the need to adapt educational methods to the needs of modern students. Taking into account the peculiarities of information perception with the help of the latest multimodal tools can significantly increase the effectiveness of teaching Chinese in higher education institutions. The article provides an analysis of the latest multimodal tools and outlines their effectiveness for different aspects of learning. The article provides an overview of multimodal tools such as Boom Cards, Quizlet, Baamboozle, LearningApps, Storybird, My storybook, Blooket, Kahoot, Wordwall, and Classtime. Examples of tasks that can be used to improve students' Chinese language. The analysis of the study can help to create guidelines for the use of multimodal tools in teaching Chinese. Highlighting the most effective tools will allow them to be integrated into the curricula of universities, schools and language courses. The results of the study can serve as a basis for teachers to create seminars and workshops. The material will help prepare them for the effective use of multimodal tools.
