Specifics of Rendering a Foreign Accent in the English-Ukrainian Translation

Abstract

The article deals with the specifics of rendering phonological stylizations of lexical level imitating a foreign accent in the English-Ukrainian translation on the material of novels “A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian” by M. Levytska, “Pioneers” by F. Cooper, and “The Witches” by R. Dahl. Theoretical conclusions are made on the basis of opposition between the position of such prominent Soviet theoreticians as K. Chukovski, V. Gak, A. Fedorov and V. Komissarov, who denied the possibility of translating phonological stylistic means with the help of analogues (parallel) means of a target language, and modern scientists, in particular, O. Rebrii, who considers such a possibility not only possible but also desirable. Having studied the translation of foreign accent imitations, selected from the above novels, we determined the general strategy of their rendering into Ukrainian, as well as specific methods and techniques applied within this strategy. Different methods of translating phonological deviations both on the basis of parallel to the source word-formative means and lexical-grammatical compensations are considered.
