Means and Consequences of Using the Precedent Name in Communication

Abstract

The article researches into the intertextual potential of the precedent name, its stylistic and cultural properties and communicative consequences of its integration into emerging texts. The precedent name is a result of the evolution of a precedent phenomenon, part of the intertextual encyclopaedia of a linguistic and cultural community. The precedent name is viewed as an ideal intertext, whose marked form fosters its integration and identification, while its semantics enables an intertextual link as a result of conceptual blending. A successful completion of these processes gives the audience a new insight, activates foreshadowing and ensures the reader’s joy and satisfaction. If the intertextual message rendered by the detected precedent name resists decoding, the reader experiences negative emotions and estrangement from the micro community, who finds the message meaningful.
