Difficulties in training future transaltors to understand English TV news

Abstract

The article deals with four types of difficulties that future translators and interpreters face while watching and interpreting TV news programmes. These difficulties are connected with the context of TV news, its linguistic form, discourse structure, and terms of presentation. The results of a survey of future translators/interpreters are discussed. The difficulties of comprehension and interpretation are exemplified with a sample of a TV news item.
