Possibilities of computer games application in the educational process (case study of the city modeling in Cіtіes Skylines)
Abstract
The purpose of the article is to highlight the possibilities of using the Cities Skylines game in school education to develop basic ideas about construction and city planning and identify the advantages and disadvantages of using computer games as a method of active learning in geography at school.
Basic material. Analyzing the development of the actual city with the help of a city simulation in the Cities Skylines game allows studying and analyzing the main factors affecting the city’s development, such as geographical location and demographic, social, economic, and environmental characteristics. It makes it possible to conclude the optimal way of spatial and functional organization of the city, which meets contemporary development requirements. The use of the game in school education for the development of basic ideas about the construction and planning of cities is of great importance because the game allows students to understand the complex processes of urban development, promotes the formation of critical thinking and the ability to work with large volumes of information, and develops practical skills. Among the city modeling tools in Cities Skylines, it is worth noting: zone planning, road networks, social infrastructure, recreational and commercial facilities, information review, and economic management. The leading indicators for analysis are population density, feasibility and correct location of transport networks, the ratio of residential areas to industrial and commercial zones, environmental indicators, needs of citizens, etc. The process of modeling an actual city in the Cities Skylines game involves the use of the method of geodata automatic processing, modeling urban areas visually and in real terms. The experience of computer games is often unique and unrepeatable, making to reflect and develop skills that might not even be manifested under other conditions. Computer games can become an auxiliary element in geography at school. Cities Skylines is a convenient tool for active learning for students and interesting geography teaching. The teacher can set problems and tasks in the game and use them as a practical lesson on urbanism. Using the Cities Skylines game in school education has its advantages and disadvantages. The benefits are the possibility of practical application of theoretical knowledge, creative and problem-solving thinking development, and the opportunity to test different urban management strategies. However, disadvantages include the possibility of distracting students from classes and conflicts between students, and Cities Skylines has in-game flaws.
Conclusions. The Cities Skylines computer game allows simulating a city, providing an opportunity to study the basic principles of urban planning, such as the location and functional purpose of zones and other factors affecting the development of a city. The Cities Skylines game allows students to see what a city looks like and how it can be planned in real time. This can be particularly useful for school learning, where students can use the game to develop a basic comprehension of urban planning and development, which will help them better understand the impact of these factors on the lives of the city and its inhabitants. The modern gamification of education and the introduction of information technologies, including game technologies, into all spheres of life, create several challenges for scientists and educators. We must consider and use with the maximum positive result, which we plan to work on in the future.
