Abstract

This article explores current trends in the translation of Spanish-language film titles into English. As the popularity of cinema continues to grow, the number of films released each year continues to increase. This move is aimed at capturing and attracting new audiences to the cultural heritage of Spanish-speaking countries. This study is based on films that have a release date in Spain in 2024. This mission is important because Spanish cinema is distinguished by its unique atmosphere, deep cultural identity and rich history. This emphasises the importance of providing not only accurate translations, but also those that preserve and even better reveal the essence of the original content for foreign audiences. The title of a film plays a crucial role in attracting viewers and forming their first opinion of the film. Therefore, the issue of translating film titles is becoming increasingly relevant and important in the modern translation environment.

Translators are faced with the challenge of finding creative and effective approaches to ensure accurate and culturally relevant representation of film titles. The article examines aspects of this process, emphasising the importance of a translation that meets the expectations of the target audience while preserving the message of the original title. Translators must carefully choose strategies and decisions, taking into account the linguistic and cultural peculiarities of both the source and target languages. Knowledge of the film's plot and language culture is essential to achieve this goal. The most common translation tactics are direct translation, transformation and indirect translation. The analysis of film title translations shows that translators prefer direct translation and transformation, preserving original cultural elements wherever possible. Ultimately, the effectiveness of a film title translation has a significant impact on both the audience's perception of the film and the film's success, which highlights the importance of strategic and thoughtful translation choices for promoting culture on the international market.
