EL CONCEPTO DE AUXILIAR DE CONVERSACIÓN Y SUS FUNCIONES EN EL MARCO DE LA PROTECCIÓN TEMPORAL (SOBRE EL EJEMPLO DEL REINO DE ESPAÑA)

Abstract

This article explores the role of bilingual conversation assistants in the context of temporary protection in Spain, with emphasis on the attention to Ukrainian refugees after the activation of Directive 2001/55/EC in 2022. The analysis addresses the historical evolution of the conversation assistant program in Spain and its recent adaptation to serve students in situations of vulnerability resulting from humanitarian crises, such as the hostilities in Ukraine.

The integration of conversation assistants fluent in both Ukrainian and Spanish has proven to be crucial in the adaptation of refugee minors to the Spanish educational system, acting not only as linguistic mediators, but also as an emotional and cultural support. These professionals facilitate communication between students and teaching staff, helping to overcome language and cultural barriers. In addition, they play a key role in the interaction between refugee parents and educational institutions, helping in the interpretation and translation of essential documents.

Through an analysis of the responsibilities and ethical challenges faced by these assistants, the study identifies the need for specific training in contexts related to temporary protection. It also highlights the value of the program as a cross-cultural bridge, benefiting both refugees and the host community.

The results underline the importance of professional and ethical mediation in an environment marked by uncertainty and fear, as well as the need for further research on the impact of these programs on refugee integration. In conclusion, conversation assistants represent a critical link in ensuring that the voices of the most vulnerable are heard and adequately addressed.
