Author Guidelines

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

GENERAL PROVISIONS

The Journal of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. Series: History publishes research dedicated to current issues in Ukrainian history, ancient and medieval history, archaeology, modern and contemporary history, historiography, and source studies.

Manuscripts are accepted in electronic form and must be submitted through the journal’s online submission system.

Manuscripts that do not comply with the submission guidelines will not be considered for review. Authors are not remunerated for published articles.

Manuscripts in Ukrainian and English are accepted for publication. Materials in other official languages of the European Union may be accepted at the discretion of the journal's editorial board. If the manuscript contains special fonts or words with diacritical marks, a sample clearly and correctly indicating these words must be included.

Only original materials are accepted for publication. Authors bear full responsibility for the content of their publication. The journal's editorial board reserves the right to edit the submitted manuscript. Authors have the opportunity to discuss changes with the editorial board during the proofreading stage.

The artificial intelligence tools used in the research or preparation of the manuscript must be acknowledged in the text or in the notes of the manuscript. Editors may reject manuscripts due to improper use of AI.

MANUSCRIPT STRUCTURE

• The manuscript should be submitted as a separate file in .doc, .docx, or .odt format.
• Font: Times New Roman or Aptos. Font size: 12.
• Line spacing: 1.5. Margins: 2 cm on each side.

1. AUTHOR(S) INFORMATION

The information should be formatted in both Ukrainian and English at the beginning of the article. Each author's information should be provided separately.

They should be formatted in both Ukrainian and English using uppercase letters and bold font.

Example of formatting the manuscript title:

3. ABSTRACT

They should be formatted in both Ukrainian and English and italicized.

The length of each abstract for an article should be no less than 1,800 characters (including spaces) but no more than 2,000 characters (excluding the title and keywords).

The length of each abstract for a review, overview, or paper should be no less than 600 characters (including spaces) but no more than 1,000 characters (excluding the title and keywords).

4. KEYWORDS

They should be formatted in both Ukrainian and English in bold font, with a maximum of 12 words in each language.

Examples of formatting keywords:

Keywords: cultural heritage, Russo-Ukrainian War, Ukraine.

5. MAIN TEXT 

All foreign-language excerpts in a Ukrainian manuscript must be translated into Ukrainian, while those in an English manuscript must be translated into English.

Translated quotations in Ukrainian or English must include the following notes:

• At the end of the translated quotation, include (trans. from Russian).
• After the first translated quotation, there should be a note (asterisk) about the translator: *Here and thereafter, unless otherwise stated, all translations are by the author(s) of the article.

6. REFERENCES

Sources. Sources are to be cited exclusively in footnotes and formatted according to the DSTU 8302:2015 standard. There is no need to include sources in the bibliography. Sources written in Cyrillic do not need to be transliterated.

In references to archival sources, if it is not possible to indicate the title of the archival file, the name of the relevant collection (fond) should be provided.

If the same source is cited again, the bibliographic description should be provided in an abbreviated form in the second and subsequent instances. If the same source is cited two or more times consecutively, the footnote should include the term "Там само" or "Ibid."

Literature. References to literature should be cited in parentheses within the main text. Authors' names should be written in Latin characters according to transliteration rules. When formatting references, do not use "Ibid." ("ibidem") or "Там само."

7. BIBLIOGRAPHY

The bibliography is placed at the end of the manuscript. The literature in the list is not numbered; instead:

1. It is arranged in alphabetical order by authors' surnames and titles.
2. If citing multiple works by the same author, they should be listed in chronological order (by year of publication, starting with the earliest).
3. If citing multiple works by the same author published in the same year, they should be arranged alphabetically by title, and a lowercase Latin letter (a, b, c) should be added to the publication year.

The bibliography must not exceed 1/5 of the total manuscript length:

• For articles – no more than 8,000 characters (including spaces)
• For reviews, overviews, or reports – no more than 3,000 characters (including spaces)

The bibliographic description of works published in Cyrillic languages consists of two parts: transliteration and the original description. The bibliographic description should not be translated. Only the titles of academic journals published after 1945 should be translated into English. The titles of such periodicals are provided in square brackets after the original title.

It is necessary to provide the DOI (digital object identifier) for all articles and books that have a digital object identifier.

8. LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS

After the bibliography, a list of abbreviations is added in alphabetical order. Abbreviations in Cyrillic should be listed first, followed by those in Latin script.

9. TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS

Total number of tables and illustrations: up to 10 in total.

Illustrations (photographs, maps, drawings, diagrams, etc.):

• Must be submitted as separate files in .jpeg, .jpg, .tif, or .png Each file should be at least 300 KB in size.
• Each illustration should have a sequential number (Fig. 1.) and a caption provided below the illustration.
• The rights holder of each illustration must be indicated (museum, archive, author, etc.). In the event of copyright infringement, the authors of the publications will bear full responsibility.

Tables:

• Each table should have a sequential number (Table 1.) and a title (provided above the table).
• Notes and references for the table should be formatted as citations to sources.
