Contemporary museum as an institution of social education

Abstract

The confusion of the museums of the first years of independence of our country, the need to find its new essence in the making a new democratic state on the basis of democracy made the leading museums revise radically the methodological essence of their activities. Using its own resources, without the help of science, education system and cultural creative activities, the museum is not able to perform such tasks. First of all, for this purpose, it is necessary to reform the own museum functions: to depict the true past and the present state of the country, having explored the cause-and-effect relationship to explain the social problems of the present from the national-liberation positions and to predict the further ways to the future for the people and the state.

The external, internal analysis of the available sources and their content analysis carried out in the article has described the general logic and tendencies of reforming the contemporary Ukrainian museum. First of all, museums have begun to look for the ways to a missing visitor, developed the active cooperation with the education system, primarily with the school, school museums and institutions of higher education.

They have introduced the innovative and interactive forms of excursion work, initiated the sociological and psychological and pedagogical research of the real and potential audience of the museum, its tastes and information needs. In search of the necessary expenses for these activities the museums have begun to expand the aspects of museum work, embodying animation and leisure club forms of work. They have developed the integrated programs for shaping the museum culture of the mixed-age audience of visitors, recognizing their new functions as a democratic institution of social education. It has been a way out on the theory and practice of museum pedagogy as a complex scientific methodology of the contemporary museum activities.
