Discourse as phantom object: from text to discourse and back?
Abstract
This article addresses the issue of the heuristic potential of the category of discourse viewed as a specific object of linguistic analysis in present-day paradigm of the humanities. Multiple interpretations and approaches to the notion make it fuzzy and eclectic. In terms of various traditions of discourse analysis the author of the article looks into it as referenced to other basic categories such as the functional style and genre which have been traditionally used in Russian school of functional linguistics. The article focuses on the fundamental differences and methodological similarity in using the notion of the functional style compared to that of discourse and, more generally, on the differences between functional linguistics and the so-called discourse analysis.
