ROLE OF PARLIAMENTARY INSTITUTIONS IN REGIONAL INTEGRATION ASSOCIATIONS: COMPARATIVE LEGAL ANALYSIS

Keywords: regional integration, institutional system, parliamentary assembly, European Union, NAFTA, MERCOSUR

Abstract

Currently regional economic integration has become one of the distinctive trends of the modern international relations. However, the development of regional integration project encountered the need of «parliamentarisation» of the institutional systems. The article provides a comparative legal analysis of the functions and competences of the parliamentary assemblies of the most known and important intergational projects. The article argues that the level of the involvement of the parliamentary assembly into the activity of the intergational project as well as the range of its functions and competences depends upom the aims and selected model of the integration. However, the increase of the integration level causes «parliamentarisation» of the entire institutional system, which is reflected by the enhancement of functions and competences of the parliamentary assembly.
