Activities of the Charity Society publication of common and cheap books and books "for the people" about Vuk Karadzic (1906) A. Veretelnik

Abstract

Popular brochure by A. Veretelnik Stories About Vuk Karadzhic published in Ukrainian by Saint-Petersburg Charity Group for Publishing Cheap Books of General Use is the example of interest to Vuk Karadzhic and his work in Ukraine. Author of the brochure, Andrey Veretelnik, was Ukrainian ethnographer and folklorist, prose writer, publicist and editor. The aim of this paper is to study this rarity publication, which is important as a production of the “third culture” (N. Tolstoy) – “common folk’s” or “low” literature, and explore the figure of its author, today almost forgotten, but once a successful employee of Lvov’s NTS, correspondent of V. Gnatyuk, F. Vovk and I. Franko.
