In the article the attempt on new is made to interprets the facts connected to a history of development, of lighting devices in Greco-Roman and Byzantium company during transition from late antiquity to an early middle ages. The gradual curtailing of quantity production of clay lamps of a Roman type down to fall vanishing in VII century, their replacement small inexpressive opened lampions is explained not by crisis of craft, and parallel growth of production glass icon-lamps and especially waxen candles, which in the issue has gained top. In it to the author the natural change of epoch in evolution of lighting business is seen which was completed by cardinal revolution come on beginning of «dark ages».
