Focus and Scope

Biophysical Bulletin is an open access periodic Ukrainian scientific journal. It publishes research articles, short communications, and reviews regarding all problems of biological physics and related fields.

Biophysical Bulletin is approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for publishing papers submitted for Ph.D. and Dr.Sci. degrees in biology, physics and astronomy, applied physics and nanomaterials, and biomedical engineering (list of Category A Journals, the Decree N 220 of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine of 21.02.2024).

Media identifier in the Register of the field of Media Entities: R30-04481 (Decision № 1538 dated May 9, 2024 of the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, Protocol № 15).

The goal of the journal is publishing original scientific articles, short communications and reviews dealing with physical, mathematical, and engineering problems pertaining to biological systems and solved by methods of experimental and theoretical physics, mathematical modeling and computer simulation.

Journal mission is to deliver recent advancements in biophysics and life sciences to peers and broad audience.

Biophysical Bulletin has the following Sections: Editorial Notes, Molecular Biophysics, Cell Biophysics, Biophysics of Complex Systems, Medical Physics, Action of Physical Agents on Biological Objects, Biophysical Methods, Chronicle

We publish articles written in Ukrainian, and English.

Biophysical Bulletin is registered as Ukrainian periodical at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, Certificate of state registration КВ № 11007 of 17.02.2006.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to Biophysical Bulletin are peer-reviewed by two reviewers. The journal follows the double-blind peer-review procedure. Reviewers are assigned by the respective members of the Editorial Board and among other aspects of a submitted manuscript, they consider paper’s correspondence to the scope of the Journal, result’s originality, adequacy of applied methods and relevance of conclusions.

Reviewers are required to provide the author with comments intended to improve the article (Reviewer guidelines).

Editorial Board based upon comments of reviewer and compliance of the manuscript with technical requirements to submitted materials makes the decision regarding acceptance of a manuscript or further revision by authors. The reviewing procedure should not take longer than one month upon receiving the manuscript. Authors are given two weeks to come up with a rebuttal letter, to improve the manuscript and submit the revised form of the paper.

Reviewers must consider the following questions and give the answer "Yes" or "No":

1. Are the results original?

2. Are the methods adequate?

3. Does the analysis correspond to the conclusions?

Reviewers indicate opinion:

1. Accept without change;

2. Accept after taking into account the comments of the reviewer;

3. Reject or add new factual material;

4. Reject due to the fact that the article does not correspond to the profile of the journal;

5. Reject due to the fact that the article contains already known facts.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published twice a year. Issues are published after approval by the Academic Board of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Open Access Policy

The Editorial Board of the journal practices a policy of immediate open access to published content, supporting the principles of free dissemination of scientific information and global exchange of knowledge for the benefit of general social progress. According to the Budapest Declaration on Open Access (2002), Open Access means free, rapid, permanent, real-time, full-text access to peer-reviewed journal material, made available to any user on the global information network. This is an open-access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution.

Biophysical Bulletin applies the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license to articles published in the journal. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.

An Open Access journal operates on a different model from a subscription: all the costs of producing such a journal and organising access to it are borne by the author of the article, the institution where he or she works, and so on.

Archiving

The journal supports the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) system to ensure secure and permanent preservation.

Publication Charges

Publications in Biophysical Bulletin are free of charge. There are no charges to submit a paper. There are no processing charges.

Plagiarism Screening Policy

We check all submitted manuscripts by StrikePlagiarism software before the review process. If plagiarism is detected, the submitted manuscript is rejected.

 Сonflict of Interest Statement

The authors declare financial or any other conflict of interest at the end of the article. They must indicate all sources of financing of their research (grants, programs, fellowships, etc). If there is no conflict of interest, the authors should state: “The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest.”

Copyright and License

Authors retain copyright and simultaneously grant the journal the right for the first publication of their work licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgment of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.

Authorship and AI tools

Authors should not list AI-assisted technologies, such as LLMs, chatbots, or image creators, as authors or co-authors. AI tools used in research or manuscript preparation must be transparently disclosed in the cover letter, acknowledgments, and methods section. Authors are responsible for accuracy, avoiding plagiarism, and guarding against AI-induced bias. Editors may reject manuscripts for inappropriate AI use, and reviewers must refrain from AI-generated reviews to maintain confidentiality.

AI-generated images and other multimedia are not allowed in our journal without explicit permission from the editors.  Exceptions may be considered for content in manuscript directly related to AI or machine learning, subject to evaluation on an individual basis.

History

Biophysical Bulletin was established in 1998 as a periodical Ukrainian journal of biophysics. From 1998 till 2008 Biophysical Bulletin was published as a series of Kharkiv University under shared ISSN 0453-8048. Since 2009 Biophysical Bulletin has its own ISSN 2075-3810 (for printed version), ISSN 2075-3829 (for online version).
