У статті доводиться, що, попри тиск із боку Російської імперії, у
досліджуваний період розвиток українського суспільства у книжковій
сфері відбувався у контексті європейських модернізаційних
традицій. Розвивався комерційний напрям видання та поширення
україномовної книги, сформувався особливий жанр української
комерційної літератури – українська лубочна книга, яку можна
оцінювати як проміжний етап у формуванні масової літератури.
Автор підкреслює, що комерційну привабливість української книги
відчували не тільки місцеві підприємці, а й російські.
