Abstract
The evolution and main modern approaches to the understanding of the region as a complex socio-economic system are considered. The features of different approaches are determined. It is proved
that the region is no longer seen as a purely territorial or historical unit, but as a functionally alternative structure that can assume certain state functions and which can function in a global framework as a semi-autonomous unit, while preserving identity that can turn into economic activity and marketing attractiveness for investors, and also can create a new image of the region.
