Abstract

The gender factor within catatonic schizophrenia is poorly studied. That is why the aim of studying is to determine the significance of gender in patients with catatonic schizophrenia. The representative group included 21 patients with a defined diagnosis, who were divided into 2 groups according to gender: 11 men entered the first group, the second group included 10 women. During studying there was used a katamnestic method, and also evaluation of positive and negative symptoms of patients, severity of the catatonic syndrome and its treatment. The work identified the major differences in the course of the disease in the studied groups. Women are characterized with a greater manifestation of catatonic symptoms and affective symptoms. A group of men is characterized with a prolonged course of symptoms and the prevalence of catatonic hallucinatory-delusional symptoms and emotional flattening. Treatment of patients in both groups was carried out with the help of antipsychotic medication and electroconvulsive therapy.
