The article attempts to determine the role of zemskogo teacher S. A. Gatsuka in the study of Old Russian antiquities of Chernigov region at the beginning of the 20th century. The results of archaeological exploration on the territory of Novgorod-Siversky Podeseniya are analyzed. A conclusion is made about the beginning of archaeological research of the hillforts on the territory of Chernihiv Region and directly on the territory of the Novgorod-Siversky Podeseniya S. A. Gatsukom.
