Abstract

Using optical spectroscopy technique, the influence of hydrophobicity of cationic polymethine dyes 3,3'-diethyloxacarbocyanine iodide (DiOC2), 3,3'-dioctadecyloxacarbocyanine iodide (DiOC18) and 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) on the efficiency of nonradiative resonance energy transfer (Fluorescence resonance energy transfer, FRET) between pairs of dyes DiOC18/DiI and DiOC2/DiI in nano volume of anionic sodium dodecyl sulphate micelles has been studied. It has been shown that besides the electrostatic interactions, the hydrophobic interactions are also very important for the binding between the oppositely charged dyes and surfactant micelles. It has been revealed that in water micellar solutions with dyes that differ by their hydrophobic behavior (DiOC2 and DiI), more hydrophobic dye DiI hampers the solubilization of less hydrophobic one (DiOC2) and as a result, an effective FRET between the dyes DiOC2 and DiI is not observed.
