Abstract

Due to the social challenges that have arisen before the Ukrainian society, the author considers two opposite types of social attitudes: attitudes to paternalism as a citizens’ waiting for assistance from the state and attitudes to the self-organization as a manifestation of activating civic consciousness and personal autonomy. On the basis of the Schwartz values theory the author examines the values foundations of these types of attitudes. The results clearly show that «paternalists», in contrast to «self-organized persons», do not perceive value of risk and novelty, significantly less support value of autonomy, and significantly more value of security. «Paternalists» do rather not perceive power, wealth and hedonism. At the same time, both groups highly appreciate conformity and traditions that indicates high importance of these values in the Ukrainian society as a whole.
