Similarity and Differences in Professional Aspirations of Ukrainian and Polish Youth: Sociological Analysis of Borderland

Abstract

The article presents the results of author’s sociological research. The main attention pays to the professional aspirations of Polish and Ukrainian school-leavers. As sociological concept the aspiration means an individual's need to meet realistic goals, which is caused by individual values and value orientations. Observations show that such the professional aspirations like a work in the prestigious private firm, highly skilled work, high wages captured the attention of all young people. The professional aspirations of Polish and Ukrainian youth is quite similar. They want to enter the white-collar class. Persons with a higher status and cultural capital more frequently invest in education and have higher professional aspirations. High level of the professional aspirations of Polish and Ukrainian youth is a factor of their emigration intentions. That’s why the borderland can be transformed into the periphery.
