Physical and mechanical characteristics of the coatings (Ti, Al)N and (Ti, Cr)N, obtained by means of vacuum-arc deposition method, have been studied. For the formed coatings the values of hardness were: (Ti, Al)N – Н = 30.6 GPa; (Ti, Cr)N with no pulses applied to the substrate — НV0,1 = 27.6 GPa, when processing with applying pulses НV0.1 = 34.5 GPa. The coefficient of friction for the system coating (Ti, Cr)N/counterbody Al2O3 during the dry friction is μ = 0.17, and for the system (Ti,Al)N/ counterbody Al2O3 μ = 0.87. Wearability of the (Ti, Cr)N coatings is 4 times lower than of (Ti, Al) N coatings.
