Cultural Code of a Compliment
Abstract
In the paper, an attempt is made to comprehensively analyse the speech act of a compliment. Different types of compliments are analysed, as well as the intentions of the addresser and the tactics of acceptance/non-acceptance of a compliment on the part of the addressee. The speech act of a compliment is also studied in the light of gender differences and inter-cultural differences and similarities. In particular, a comparative analysis of the speech act of a compliment is made in Russian, Armenian and English linguo-cultures, which leads to the conclusions on similarities and differences that reflect the national mentality specificity of the bearers of the languages under consideration.
