Abstract

A model of the vibrational dynamics of DNA with counterions, which neutralize the phosphate groups of the double helix has been elaborated. For B- and A-DNA the parameters of the model, which describe the ion-phosphate vibrations have been determined. The frequencies of the DNA conformational vibrations have been calculated for Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+ and Cs+ metal ions. It has been shown that the frequency of ion-phosphate vibrations is located within 90 - 250 cm-1 and it depends on the counterion type. The frequency of ion-phosphate vibrations is higher in the A-form of double helix than in B-form. It was found that the results of theoretical calculations are in agreement with the experimental data.
