Antihelminthic activity of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in sheep
Abstract
Antihelmintic effect of grasses sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) widely distributed in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic has been studied. It has been shown that these plants posess high antihelminthic activity in the treatment of infected sheep against gastro-intestinal nematodes. At grazing sheep within five days on pastures, rich by sainfoin and alfalfa plants, it has been found that the helminth infestation decreased, compared with the control, in case of Chabertia ovina for 27,9%, Trichocephalus ovis – for 29,5%, Haemonchus contortus – for 27,2% and Nematodirus spathiger – for 61%.
