In November 1944, the First Congress of People's Committees of Transcarpathian Ukraine proclaimed the Manifesto of Reunification with the Ukrainian SSR, which initiated the process of it incorporation into the country of the Soviets. Although the ratification of the Soviet-Czechoslovak treaty on Transcarpathian Ukraine and the formation of the Transcarpathian region of the Ukrainian SSR took place later (during Juneof 1945 till January of 1946), however, the Sovietization of the symbolic space of the region began long before these events – at the end of 1944. One of the first steps of the People's Council of Transcarpathian Ukraine was the decision on state symbols; change of names of settlements, streets and squares; perpetuating the memory of the dead Soviet soldiers by installing appropriate monuments and memorials, etc. Already in December 1944, a number of city committees approved lists of new urban street names, which is analyzed in this study.
