Abstract

The article deals with the problem of combining the past and the modern in town space. In what way and to what extent these elements are connected to each other – those are the issues requiring mutual effort of scientists in different fields.

The authors accentuate the importance of studying symbolic urban contexts. On the one hand, symbolism is something that must be clear to everyone, on the other hand, problems in reading symbolic codes arise due to constant changes that take place in society. The article considers town as a text that is dynamic and constantly changing. It is proved that town has always been a reflection of social life. So the dynamics of urban changes as well as the means of recording and interpreting them have to be the focus of modern urbanistic studies.
