In the article poetry is considered as a form of human cognitive activity. We focus on the fact that the poetic picture of the world is the mental basis of poetry. The justification of this point of view is supported by the works of postmodern theorists, the psychological theories of personality and higher cognitive processes, as well as the linguistic and philological works dedicated to the author's individual poetic world and individual poetic style research.
