Political Activity of the First Galich-Volyn Prince Roman Mstislavovich

Abstract

The paper analyses historyographical investigations dealing with Roman Mstislavovich course of life starting with the foundation of the Galich-Volyn principality, on the basis of source materials revealing the specifics of developing political processes in the Galich-Volyn principality at the end of the XII and the beginning of the XIII centuries. The article focuses on circumstances of the foundation of the new state formation, military campaigns and formation of Prince Roman’s political program «Good Order». The author traces rather unknown aspects of his activity and focuses not only on Roman Mstislavovich’s home policy in Galich-Volyn principality, but also on his foreign policy. All this is important for proper understanding the historical development of the Galich-Volyn Rus’. The paper draws conclusions on Prince Roman’s role in the corresponding political system.
