The influence of early positivism on the creativity of the scientist is seen in the implementation of the latest method of archeographical work, the adoption of M. I. Kostomarov separate elements of «positive teaching».

The main focus is on occasions that happened in Ukraine (and in particular in Kharkiv) from the second part of the 19^th century to the beginning of the 21^st century.

Alina and Kostomarov: Love Reflected in Letters

This paper studies the letters of M. Kostomarov's future wife – A. Kragelska. These letters were written in 1850–1851 and superscribed to Saratov, where M. Kostomarov was deportated in consequence of Brotherhood of Saint Cyril and Methodius case. The letters' specialty – is their sense transformation in “memory texts” over time. The later modifications on the manuscripts confirm that. I researched the writing instruments, the paper and the handwriting. It could be concluded, that the sources' external facts reveal A. Kragelska's emotions during writing. A. Kostomarova converted her letters into corpus delicti of M. Kostomarov's leaving. Hence, writing the autobiography, she used the letters to make them “causal narrative” for the separation the periods when they were together and asunder.

M. M. Karamzin and M. I. Kostomarov: two historians in the same context

The article compares the work of N. M. Karamzin and N. I. Kostomarov. It is argued that the people and their destinies were the focus of these historians attention. It gives grounds to identify both of them as representatives of romantic historiography. However, it should be borne in mind that romanticism did not constitute a homogeneous ideological trend. Rather, it involves over time. Accordingly, the view was put forward that Karamzin and Kostomarov represented (in chronological and ideological sense) a kind of opposing poles of romantic historiography.

‘A new and strange phenomenon for the old Russia’: the specificity of N. I. Kostomarov’s historic coverage of the Old Belief.

The article attempts to ascertain the originality of Nikolay Kostomarov’s views on essence and value of the Old Belief. The paper traces the linkages between N. I. Kostomarov’s position on the Old Belief and earlier expressed views of Ivan Aksakov and Afanasiy Shapov. The author analyzes the influence of social-political and religious beliefs as well as methodological approaches of Nilolay Kostomarov on the specificity of his Old Belief studies. It is shown that Kostomarov’s views of the Old Belief are characterized by orientalizing of the folk, which was rather typical for the 19^th century.

N.I. Kostomarov in Representations of Ukrainian Historiographic Narratives

The article shows the main ways N.I. Kostomarov` scientific work is incorporated into history of historic science. The author states that contemporary Ukrainian historiographic narrative uses the heritage of the historian for constructing of the history of national historic thought, while ignoring general imperial historiograhic context. At the same time, Russian historians of historic science see the work of Kostomarov as product of exclusively imperial intellectual surroundings. The author stresses that possible alternatives to historiographic extremes can be found in the potential of the very intellectual heritage of this outstanding historian.

The article gives a comparative analysis of N. Kostomarov's autobiography records made by N. Belozerskaya and A. Kostomarova, which makes it possible to reveal their common features (main storylines and most specific subjects, partly the emotional load) and differences (chronological frames, the volume of texts, the existence of unique stories and discrepancies in describing the emotional state of the memoirist or specific details in the subjects common to the two autobiographies, the nature of the stories, their literary design), factors that influenced the organization of two autobiographical texts, as well as the degree of their authenticity are identified.

The Emotional Dimension of Kostomarov`s Autobiography

The article explores of the “emotional intentionality” of Kostomarov`s autobiography. The author argues that the use of various emotives or the intentional absence of emotions in the text operated as instruments for the construction of autobiography as the author`s professional testament. “Emotional management”, figuring in the autobiography, served to impose a strict scholarly character on Kostomarov`s research activity. It also gave an opportunity to resist the pressure of emotional regimes and create a domain of “emotional liberty” for expression of social and politics standpoints of the author.

The author analyzes the assessments of the results of creativity and personality characteristics of M. I. Kostomarov, which were expressed by the scientists of Kharkiv University. It is noted that the creative legacy and the life path of this outstanding historian invariably attracted the attention of researchers, and the spectrum of opinions about him is very wide. Kharkiv historians paid him more attention than representatives of other scientific centers of Ukraine (with the exception of Kyiv), their work, as a rule, has a weighted approach and the desire to comprehend the role of the Kharkiv period in the life of the scientist.

The article studies the public discussion of the middle of XIXth century about the origin of serfdom in Ukrainian lands, and the role of professional historians in this discussion. The positions of the debate parties, their arguments and key debatable questions are described. The article focuses on the original point of view how peasants were turned into serves in Lithuanian-Polish period of the Ukrainian history, proposed by N.I. Kostomarov - point of view that put under question the established historiographic approaches.

The author has discovered a large numbers of the scholar`s depictions in different artistic media: painting, graphic works, sculpture, and engraving. The authors of these works of art depicted the historian during different periods of his life. They tried to both represent his external appearance and reflect his inner world. The available portrait gallery of Kostomarov confirms the academician`s considerable authority not just among the academic community but also among the general public.

The formation of a prominent national historian and public figure M. I. Kostomarov, as Ukrainian populist is considered. It is shown in his scientific and journalistic writings, written in the light of the first romantic and later positivist methodology, he propagated the idea of studying Ukrainian nationality, its history and culture, affirmed the development of Ukrainian national science, defended the right of Ukrainians to use their native language and literature, sought to affirm the historical self-sufficiency of Ukrainian in theory and in social practice. All this contributed to the establishment of the national-cultural identity of the Ukrainian people, its national-cultural revival, the nomination of the requirements of cultural-national autonomy and federalism as a means of democratization of society.

The article deals with the conceptualization of bio-historiography as a branch of biography. The author pays particular attention to the problem of the formation of the source base for bio-historiographical studies and comprehension the meaning of the sources procedures. Having considered the existing historiographical versions of structuring of one`s source base the author offers her own versions of ordering and combining sources, noting their correlation with the types of bio-historiographical studies.

The author analyzed the journalistic papers of M.I. Kostomarov, which were published in the early 1860's and are devoted to the problems of reforming th Russian universities. Kostomarov proposed an "open university" project, which did not provide for the existence of a student corporation. The ideas expressed by him sparked a heated discussion, in which prominent figures of science and education took part. It is noted that despite the consonance of Kostomarov's views and the "revolutionary democrats", he ultimately took up and defended liberal positions. The project he proposed was partly realized when the "Open University of Shanyavsky" was created.

The article considers and compares the sources and historiographical estimates of the Synopsys of Kiev of 1674, made by modern Ukrainian, Russian, West European and American researchers. Common approaches and differences in the views of historians are revealed. The conclusion is made about the contradictoriness and polarity of the analytical and axiological assessments presented in science. The common feature of the research of the Synopsis of Kiev of 1674 today is the fact that historians realize that it is necessary to study this historical source in the context of "a long time" and "a large space", on the basis of a systematic approach and an interdisciplinary methodology.

The history of Ukraine in didactic literature of Russian Federation is not presented as a separate category. It is not included in the context of global or European historical process but it is seen almost exclusively as a part of national history.
