Abstract

The problem of data comparison is particularly related to the study of different languages in diverse social and cultural contexts. For international studies, such as the European Social Survey (ESS), the International Program Social Survey (ISSP), the World and European research values (WVS / EVS) and others, formulations of questions, their translation into foreign languages, and their adaptation play a crucial role in a comparative context. The article presents the results of two pilot studies of the refined method of the basic individual values of Shalom Schwartz, which was translated into Ukrainian. The methodology has greater possibilities of detail and evaluation of human values compared to the previous version. In the modern version of the model, 19 basic values are allocated, which are placed on the motivational circle by the principle: the neighboring values are the most compatible, the opposite - conflict with each other. The English version of this technique was translated into Ukrainian and tested within two pilots. The obtained results allowed us to verify the conceptual and empirical validity of each statement, which are indicators of measured values. During the two pretests, 960 respondents were interviewed using an online-survey and 136 respondents by questionnaires. Exploratory factor analysis allowed to estimate how the indicators of each of the 19 values had a relevant translation from the English version of the methodology. According to the results of the pretests, recommendations for further adaptation and improvement of the Ukrainian version of the PVQ-57 methodology were formulated.
